ERMA'S CHILD

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The child came to her out in the desert
On New Year's Eve back in 'forty-three
While her husband flew the big birds out in Roswell
That led to the Great Victory
A brother was born five years later
Two boys in a small family
The first became a voice for all nature
And a star for the whole world to see.
1st Chorus:
Here's to the flowers in the sunshine,
Here's a song for the clouds in the sky
Here's a song for the child in the clover
Who chases the big butterfly.
Here's a song for all the stars in heaven
Here's a song for the sigh in the wind
Here's a song to the life in the ocean
Erma's child is singing for them.
Their family lived all around the country
At Eglin down by the sea
In the heart of an American child
Is a soul that yearns to be free.
Montgomery was hot in the summer,
In Texas, Fort Worth could be dry
In Tuscon, he yearned to see the mountains
And his father taught him to fly.
2nd Chorus:
Here's a song for the heart that is lonely
Here's a song for the child who cries
Here's a song for the birth of the morning
And a song for a future that dies.
Here's a song for the man who's a singer
Here's a song for two stars in the wind
Here's a song for the love of the wild
Erma's child was singing for them.
One left for the City of Angels
To travel and to sing and to roam
Though he traveled the vast world all over,
What he longed for most was at home.
He left us too early in the autumn
On a flight out over the sea
Through his songs, he's still here, he's never left us
Still a voice for the wild and free.
Last Chorus:
Here's a song for the one who remains here
And a song for the one who has gone
For the man who still works for our future
And the one who has left us his songs
Here's a song for the singer of Aspen
And a song for his brother so tall
Most of all, it's a song for their mother
And the children she gave to us all
Here's a song for you, dearest Erma
And your child who lives in us all.
