| DUTCH'S BOY Dedicated to John Denver, 1943-1997 by Edward M. Stowers 6-26-97 He's a singer of the highlands Up where it's wild and free, Alone out in the aspen Is where he longs to be. He's a man of many faces, But the one that's known to me Is the one that sings the mountain songs That touch the heart in me. Though at times he's lost his path there He always finds a way To paint pictures with mere music; To express what I can't say, And he's taken me on journeys With just a guitar and a band, But the part I think I love the most Is when he sings about the land. He's a flyer and he's a cowboy And he's been a friend to me Seen me througfh some bad and good times With just a melody. He's a leader and a symbol, Yet few know his real name, But from his songs he sings for me I know we feel the same. Here's to the Rocky Mountains! And the Colorado songs! To Calypso and Alaska! To space and out beyond! To the places where he takes me Out where my heart can roam. On a country road or a mountain side, He always brings me home. So, this song is sung for him now Wherever he may be, In a snow-rimmed mountain meadow Or by the deep blue sea. Though I'll prob'ly never meet him, I wish that he might see I'll be there if he needs a friend Just like's he's been for me. (Added) (So, John, this song's for you now Wherever you may be, In heaven's mountain meadows Where the spirit can fly free Though I'll never meet you in this life, I'll keep your legacy I'll be here to sing your songs When I feel your hand on me.) Thank you, John, for the songs you sang Those gifts you give to me. |
