Denver Delights ...

From time to time, little things happen that remind you of John.
They always make you smile ... I like to call them  'Denver Delights'

=================================================================
Thanks for sending me your 'Denver Delights' ... Keep them coming and look for them in future newsletters ... Laura

From Patti ...
A friend of my Mom's, Diane, and her husband went to Beijing China for vacation.
They fell in love with their tour guide and wanted to adopt him and bring him back
home with them. The day they left it was the tour guides birthday and they asked him
what they could send him from the states.
His only request was a John Denver CD!!!!!
Diane knew I was a fan and asked what CD I recommended.  I gave my Mom a couple
of suggestions to pass along and asked to
get the tour guides name and email address
to add to our group
.   I haven't gotten that yet but hopefully I will.

From Janice ... (this is a GREAT one)
How is this for a Denver Delight??? ... I just had a surprise birthday party from my
family this past Sunday Feb 19th....and believe me it was
a BIG 5-0 for me!!!

Let's just say they gave me a combo of the
"70's", "butterflies" AND a
"Tribute to John Denver"
all rolled up into one ... LOL

I had no idea they had planned this, but when time came for the party after church
my husband took me to a place
(I basically had visited a lot when I was growing up).
My niece met me at the car and
blindfolded me BEFORE I could go into the building.

When inside we walked around and she stopped me (somewhere) and left me with
my second oldest sister
(I have four older than I). She told me to take my pants off!!!
(still blindfolded here) OK.....Are we in the bathroom? Yes, put on your blue jeans, ok.
Now, take off your shirt!!! OK....
Are you sure we are in the bathroom?....Yes,
OK ... she puts another shirt on me which turned out to be too big, so she found
another one smaller
(later I found out it was the shirt my daughter had on). Then she put
something on my head and asked if I could see without my glasses...
took them off and put something on my face.

Still blindfolded, my sister walked me out of the bathroom and took the blindfold off
and the next thing I saw was a room full of family and friends dressed up like hippies
(remember the pink or blue granny glasses and head bands?) ... Through pink granny glasses!!!!
I looked down and had on a pink
tie-dyed shirt!!!

Then I listened and they were playing
"Leaving On A Jet Plane"!!!!!
Then I stood for a photo session and taken on a tour of surprise gifts....

a poster of the
Muppet Show cast, a poster of "JD & The Muppets: A Christmas Together",
a poster announcing
JD's Wildlife Concert at Fiddler's Green in Colorado, a table (believe it or not) fixed up as a Tribute to John Denver with two lobby cards from "Oh, God", a picture from when JD was young leaning up against a wall with a guitar and granny glasses, and a picture of JD in his later years (a very good one), my niece works with stained glass and she
made me a
stained glass butterfly sitting on top of a stump of a log with a ladybug ...
it is beautiful, and a glass
poem about butterflies.

Then we went on with the
"tour", there was another table set up with several of John's LPs (one was from a friend at church, she bought it in 1979) a Saturday Night Fever LP with a large SNF poster, and a record player/cassette/CD combo which I was told was a gift to me too!!!

JD's CD was still playing...."Rocky Mountain High".....I was on cloud nine by this time!!!

Next came another surprise... a poster of
"Foxfire" was placed on a mantle over the
fireplace with a fire going
( I have been looking for this one for a long time) ... and I also got a
Mirror Globe or "Disco Ball" with the spotlight, which the little ones had a blast
with chasing the lights on the floor!!!!  They kept on turning the lights off so
they could see better ... LOL

OK....meal time anyone??
We had hamburgers, hot dogs, baked beans, chili and all the fixings.

Then I saw the Birthday cake ... another one of my nieces works at a Wal-Mart Bakery
fixed me a
John Denver Cake complete with two pictures of JD on it.  When they cut it ...
they didn't want to cut the pictures, so they saved that part of the cake for me to take home
so, I had to be the one to do it......sorry John!!

For presents, I'll make it short....I got
28 of JD's LPs(several were multiples, but I didn't care!),
a
T-Shirt from Wolfpup of "Take Me Home Country Roads, West Virginia", a John Denver wall clock, butterfly jewelry boxes (one was a musical with "Wing beneath My Wings"), one of my
nieces knew of someone who does etching and had him take a
picture of JD and
etch it in glass
(to avoid copyrighting problems, the picture was turned backwards), and the biggest
surprise was a
John Denver "shadow box" AND a JD scrapbook with rare photos of JD
at Windstar and playing golf...all found online or on ebay!!!!

I also found out later that my oldest sister and niece had been looking for all this stuff
online since March of last after my fourth sister's 50th birthday!!!!   So, this was truly
put together by the family, since they knew that I was a
big John Denver fan and
wanted to make this birthday a special one for me....
and THAT they did!!!!

I got a really
BIG card signed by everyone there including a lady who has been a
friend of the family for years, she wrote
" Happy 50th Birthday, have 50 more"...
her Mother was 104 years young when she passed away and she, herself is now
90 years young and will be 91 in April and still going strong growing flowers!!!
It just made me smile as I read it.

Had a great day and was really excited with everything I got and people were telling John
(my husband) now you are going to have to build a new room onto the house just to display everything.....a room, no way, I'll have to build a whole house!!!   LOL

News & Info from Our Members ...

From Patti ...
I never got to see John Denver in concert. A true regret of my life. So as a result,
if anyone remotely associated with John comes around, I try my best to go see them.
One of those people was
Arlo Guthrie. The connection, the song City of New Orleans.
He worth going to see if you have the opportunity.  I got to me him, had my picture
taken with him and got his autograph.   That was a couple of years ago.

Most recently I went to see
John Prine. I had to work the day of and the day after
so I didn't decide until the day of the concert to go. I thought about not getting to see
John Denver and that kicked me into gear.  I just planned to go into work late the next
day so I could get some sleep
(I get up at 3:30 am when I'm on first shift). I was very glad I went.
He opened up the concert with
Blow Up The TV so that set the mood just right for me!!!
The only problem,
I was the only one doing the wooohoo after "eat a lot of peaches"
but I didn't care!!!  Half way through the concert he did "Angels From Montgomery".
For his curtain call he did
"Paradise". I had my hat trick!!!!

I noticed during the concerts that after some of the songs he would throw his
guitar pick back over his shoulder. So after the concert I went up to the stage and asked
one of the workers if he could get me one and he did.  It has John's name on one side
and his logo on the other.  Then I hung around for a while hoping I could meet him.
I noticed the other people waiting had back stage passes and I thought about leaving but
as Laura knows I'm good at "trespassing." So I hung around and soon a fellow came
out and escorted the group,
with me in it, to the "green" room ...
So I got to meet
John Prine, have my picture taken with him and got his autograph.
It was a good night. If he have the opportunity to see him, I recommended it!!!

Staying Centered with Tom Crum ... from  Aikiworks.com

Recently, I visited my dear friend, Omana, wife of a local fisherman in a small,
impoverished village on the southwestern coat of India. I had helped her family in
the 1990’s when their hut was demolished and all were suffering from malnutrition.
Her family has not required my support for many years. Her children are nearly
grown and her daughter is attending a boarding school about two hours from home.
We talk about Omana’s hopes for her daughter and the aid she may need to continue
her schooling.   More education means traveling even farther from their village,
with Omana seeing less and less of her only daughter. Omana’s answer is simple,
“I want for her whatever will make her happy.”

I smile. I understand. My answer is the same for my own daughter.
A few tears fill both our eyes.
It happens every time I get to sit with Omana.

In India, I am immersed in a very different way of life. Close to Omana’s home,
fishermen are pushing their huge boats out to sea, trying to catch the night’s dinner
in an ocean that has yielded significantly fewer fish since the tsunami.
Within a mile of the village, the town takes over, streets crowded with people in
colorful garb and dense traffic –
bicycles, carts being hauled by men,
three wheeled taxis, cars and trucks.

But, as the two of us sit on Omana’s front stoop, our conversation always turns to
our values and dreams. The differences in our lifestyles fade and the common ground
becomes clear. This is the reason our connection remains over the years.
We are simply two human beings trying to get through life, with the same cares
and anxieties about those we love. I realize that whenever that basic truth is honored,
the base for conflict resolution exists, whether in a village on the shores of the
Arabian Sea or a corporate office environment.
