| Denver Delights ... From time to time, little things happen that remind you of John. They always make you smile ... I like to call them 'Denver Delights' ================================================================= Thanks for sending me your 'Denver Delights' ... Keep them coming and look for them in future newsletters ... Laura ================================================================= From Laura: From time to time I get a chance to take my guitar to work with me ... I really enjoy sharing John's music with my patients ... During one of those recent visits with an 80+ lady, we started talking about John and his marriage to Annie and then to Cassie. Without missing a beat, she said "Well, I would have been his THIRD wife!" I told her she would have had to "GET IN LINE!" OK ... My most recent "Denver Delight" occurred yesterday. Anyone who has ever eaten out with me probably knows I do NOT like pickles. So, my dear, dear friends at work decided that since it's my birthday ... I should have some pickles. Lots of pickles. My desk was covered with balloons, jars of pickles and real really smelly pickles!!! However, in an attempt to get me to like these pickles ... they came with names like "Rocky Mountain Pickles", "Thank God I'm a Pickle Boy" All the balloons had pickle messages too ... "For Pickle", "I'm Leaving on a Pickle Plane", "Annie's Pickle", For Baby, For Pickle" You get the idea ... They also had a cake for me and lots of surprises! Thanks guys ... This was definitely one of my "Best Ever Birthdays" |

| "The Littlest Cowboy" by Michael Chandler Author Michael Chandler and his young son, Preston, spent many winter afternoons working a snowplow through the drifts of Colorado snow near their Little Woody Creek horse ranch. Sometimes they made paths for cars, for people, or for cattle, and sometimes they just made paths for fun. One day they decided to clear a road that led to a snowbound home. The owner, a rugged cowboy named Joe Henry, asked if someone had hired them. When they said no, the cowboy smiled, and they all became fast friends. A few weeks later, Joe Henry--a one-time miner, hockey player, and sailor who now wrote cowboy poetry-- invited them to his Christmas Eve celebration. The party was held in Joe's barn in honor of his horse, Lefty, who was to enjoy his annual Christmas carrot and oats pie. Another man and his son had also been invited. What occurred that magical evening was to be the most memorable Christmas Eve in Michael Chandler's life . . . An evening of live acoustic music in the Rocky Mountains with John Denver! The three men, two boys, and one horse enjoyed each other's company with stories, song, food, laughter, and peaceful silence. John Denver, known to the author's son only as a "guitar playing fella," completed the evening with a peaceful rendition of "Silent Night." His version of the song is included as a CD in The Littlest Cowboy's Christmas. This heartwarming true story evokes the special spirit of Christmas and is a celebration of the simple pleasures of good music and good friends. John Denver fans will especially appreciate this glimpse at his life "offstage,"when he was simply a "guitar fella." About the Author... Michael Chandler's first book with Pelican was Dreamweaving: The Secret to Overwhelming Your Business Competition. The father of two, and an avid Old West stunt gunfighter, he resides in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, with his wife. Terry Jacobsen was born and raised in Minnesota and now lives in Arizona. Since 1996 he has been a member of the reenactment touring group the Old West Society of Minnesota. This is his first book. | It seems a shame to see September swallowed by the Wind, And more than that it's oh so sad to see the summer end. And though the changing colors are a lovely thing to see, If it were mine to make the change, I think I'd let it be. ~ ~ ~ John Denver |

| Staying Centered ... by Thomas Crum Associates “I spy something yellow!” by Cathy Crum A young mother was taking her pre-schooler for a walk along the bike path by our home, where I was outside gardening. The little boy danced along by her side, looking right and left in great earnest. Then the joyful Mom started to sing, “Yell-OO! Yell-OO! YELL-o, YELL-o, yell-OO!!” The beauty of this activity touched my heart and I felt privileged to be an unobserved witness. Many other times I have watched families out for walks which seemed to me more like “forced marches”! But this Mom had found a way to make the walk fun for her young son as well as for herself. “Turn Your Life of Work into A Work of Art” was the maxim she embodied. What a healthy choice! It reminded me that “work” – whether parenting, doctoring, writing, catering, teaching, plumbing, accounting, CEOing or phone-answering – doesn’t have to be a “forced march.” It can be a game of “I Spy,” “I Breathe” or “I Appreciate” – and we can add the music whenever we like. <+><+><+><+><+><+><+><+><+><+><+><+><+><+><+><+> "Who Needs Another Toaster?" by Judy Warner These are troubling times on our planet and the news media is quick to inform us. It is easy to fall into the trap of feeling powerless in the face of so much negativity. So, it is heartening when the media takes note of good news and the impact one, or perhaps two, people are having in this world - which brings us to this month’s centering story, reported in part by Spokane Washington's "Spokesman Review." A young couple, Jaye and Steve Hopkins, married in June in Spokane. As they prepared for their wedding, they set about creating a wedding to remember. But they started out a bit differently than most. They decided to skip one contemporary step of the ritual – the trip into a housewares store to pick up a price gun and take aim at the flatware and china of their dreams. Instead, the bride and the groom devised an entirely different wedding registry. They figured out a way to take the spirit of giving that surrounded their joyful day and spread it clear across to the Indian Ocean. They asked their guests to donate to poor fishing families living in the district of Alappuzha, Kerala, in South India through www.openhearts.org. For the price of a Kate Spade crystal bud vase, wedding guests could buy enough grain to sustain a family during monsoon season. For the price of Pottery Barn's champagne-colored engravable photo album, they could buy a family a goat. Or, they could contribute to a fund to build a house for a family that Steve sponsors through www.openhearts.org. What is wonderful is that the plan worked. The wedding guests chose to give over $4000 in housing donations, goats, cows, grain and vocational training. Neither Jaye nor Steve sounded remotely sad about missing out on wedding presents. Says Stephen. "I've got a blender, I've got a toaster, and I've got silverware." So, as we hear with sadness of all the pain and suffering mankind is inflicting upon mankind right now, let’s celebrate those out there doing good and having an impact – one goat at a time. (Aiki Works is particularly proud of Jaye - she is the daughter of Judy Warner, one of the creators of Centering Hints.) |
