From Barbara:
I have to write and share our family Christmas morning with you.   Of course,
it is from days long gone bye when we had children at home, but we continue to this day.
On Christmas morning we had a rule that NO ONE could come to the Christmas tree until
John Denver and the Muppets, A Christmas Together, was playing loudly on the stereo.

It began the Christmas following the year we saw the special on television and the album
was released.  It makes me so very happy that our two sons have continued that tradition
with their children; at least that is what they do when we are with them on Christmas morning.

I made sure that when they married, they had a copy of the CD so they could listen
to it on Christmas morning with their families.   One year they were visiting, and we had
only one grandchild, when
John Denver and the Muppets was played, our little
granddaughter proclaimed,
“John Denver! I love John Denver!”
Do you think my heart nearly pounded right out of my body?

Maybe you could share my story, although not written as eloquently as Jeannie Jordan-Squire, hopefully she will enjoy reading it and appreciate knowing that
there are others who think and agree ...
“Christmas just wouldn’t be Christmas ”  without John Denver and the Muppets!
News & Info from Our Members ...        From Patti B:
Hello to my Fellow John Denver Family ,
Please join me in congratulating one of our own, David Pleasants, on his recent retirement. David recently retired after serving 28 years as a law enforcement officer. He served in many
capacities during his tenure: Honor Guard member; Underwater Recovery Team member,
assist team leader and team leader; and K-9 handler. He held the rank of Sergeant at the time
of his retirement. I can't really say retirement because he moved on to another job
(he still has
a daughter in college!!!)
. One that is hopefully a lot less dangerous and stressful. I wrote the
following passage for Dave, my co-worker and friend, with the intent on reading it at his retirement ceremony but it didn't work out so I just handed him a copy.  I wanted to share
it with all of you because it contains the titles to 67 songs that John Denver recorded.
I had to tweak a few so they would fit in the sentence
(forgive me John) but see if you
can pick all 67 of them out without cheating.

For Dave,
Hey old pal. It's like a sad song wishing you farewell but it is with all this joy that I have
in my heart as I say goodbye again as you face a new eclipse in your life. There will be
any who hear the stories that were told about you today that will say I wish I could have
been there. This is your windsong, tremble if you must.

The game is over for you. No more circus, no more dealing with prisoners, no more
time in the box, no more junk. Although, I'm sure some days were diamonds. Now you
will be going easy, on easy street. Life is good. I know you're saying it's about time.
And so it goes.   A sweet surrender.

I hope your retirement days are full of rocky mountain highs with sunshine on your shoulders. I know if you had your druthers you'd spend your days dancing with the mountains,
trying to catch another butterfly while you watch the eagle and the hawk fly and listen
to the rippling waters run. Maybe you'll search for higher ground as you hear the gravel
on the ground under your wheels as the country roads take you home to the wild country. You'll thank God you're a country boy as you enjoy the singing skies and dancing waters.
You are a boy from the country, just a wild heart looking for home.

Perhaps you will be looking for space as you catch a ride on the dreamland express
or go around and around playing eighteen holes. Maybe you'll just find a cool
an' green an' shady place to have day dreams about being a child and sleeping in
grandma's feather bed. I could even see you going camping under the wild Montana skies
but I guess you'd rather be in Colorado. maybe you'll be leaving on a jet plane soon.
Maybe you and your sweet lady will send me a post card from Paris. It's up to you.
Maybe there will be no rhymes and reasons to what you do. I know you will be celebrating earth day every day and will be doing what one man can do because you are a good spirit.
It amazes me. If you run out of things to do you can always come over to my house
and rake the falling leaves. Relatively speaking it will be a sweet, sweet life.

It makes me giggle to think on all my memories about the fun we shared over the years.
There is no one like you, but now we go in two different directions and in a grand way
it has been great to be friends with you. Heart to heart, I will always remember
the gift you are.   So, hold on tightly as I'm kissing you goodbye.

Best of Luck Dave!!!

Don't forget trespassing in Colorado!!!! you won't have to worry anymore if you get caught!!!

This months Centering Tip from Tom Crum ...

Winter Magic
I woke up today to diamond-sparkled whiteness. Eighteen inches of fluffy light
magic had fallen on our Rocky Mountain home.  It was a beautiful blanket of silence
and quiet and contemplation.  I reflected on the blessing each season brings.

Every December 23, my family and I embrace the winter and count our blessings
by  taking a wilderness ski trip. Several other families join us as we cross-country
ski to a beautiful cabin, located up in the wilderness at about 11,000 feet. These
annual treks began about twelve years ago, when our youngest, Ali, was 10.
Four other girlfriends and their outdoor-loving parents and siblings ski off early
in the morning on an all-day winter excursion complete with a sled piled high
with a full Christmas dinner.  And you can bet, at the end of the trek, when
the temperature is well below freezing, darkness is coming, that cozy little
cabin nestled in the high Rocky Mountain Wilderness is Shangri-La.

I have learned to measure time differently because of these annual treks.
Just as many indigenous peoples don’t celebrate their lives in linear time
like birthdays, but instead by significant experiences and learnings,
our treks tell a history of the cycles of nature, family, and life.

When the children were younger, we parents skied their pace, taped their blisters,
and carried their gear when fatigue set in, gave them that extra scarf or a power
bar to fend off the cold, told stories to pass the time.

Over the seasons, the kids got stronger and more conditioned and mountain-hardy.
We stopped less and less. There was the significant trek when our pace was their pace.
And another when it was we who had to push to keep up with the kids.
Now, of course, they are the ones to offer to carry some of our load, or
compassionately ask “Are you guys okay?”

One day, there will be that magic moment when the cycle comes around full circle;
when we watch them head off with their own young children,
comforting them along each mile of the journey.

May your holiday season be a time to awaken to the true nature of time,
moment by moment, unhurried and present.

                                                                                              Warmly, Tom Crum
