What I Do In Honor of John Denver

I really enjoyed reading what folks had to say to this, in the Rocky Mountain High Newsletter.
So, I'd like to ask all of you who belong to the
NC Friends of JD the same question.
What DO YOU do in honor of JOHN DENVER???

From Jackie ...  My husband and I were down the Jersey Shore on Tuesday evening, something I don't get to do to often.  I could not believe all the trash that was on beach
and the jetty.  I picked up whatever I could and when we go back next week I will go
prepared with gloves and large trash bags so while he is busy working there I can be
doing something for John.  It's so sad that most of this generation has so little regard for
our planet and the life it holds.  We lost such a loud voice for the planet when we lost
John.
If any of you get to Epcot, make sure you go to the Land Pavillion and watch the Lion King movie
(sorry I forgot the exact name!) There's a quick clip of John singing at the Earth Day
concert - middle screen!  I just love that movie ... people need to see that more.

From Patti B ...
I was walking around an antique store when a familiar tune started playing.  It was
Peter, Paul and Mary performing
Leaving on a Jet Plane. Just then I came upon
a stack of children's Christmas book. I thought to myself how wonderfully ironic
it would be for me to look through this stack of books with one of
John's songs playing
and find
Alfie. With this good thought in my mind and the song humming in my head,
I began my search. I came to the end of the stack of books as the song faded from the radio with no
Alfie in sight. Disappointed but happy having heard the song, I continue my search.

From Nancy ...
WOW, I have a great
Denver Delight!! When I walked into the gym for our annual hospital picnic last week, I was blown away when I heard "Sweet Surrender" and then realized a
John Denver CD was playing!! How amazing to hear this just when I needed it.  I almost
didn't go the picnic as I was
(and still am) overwhelmed with a workload that just doesn't let up.
It really was something, getting me centered back to why I do the work I do. I complimented our Volunteer Services director on her excellent taste in music.
She "just loves" John Denver and recently bought the CD from PBS.  It gave me wonderful chance to tell me co-workers
all about the
John Denver they knew nothing about.  Some were receptive, others well ...
you know how it goes.   "Do what you can do." Right!!!

Also, a few weeks ago, I was in a store (can't remember which one) and heard a Rega style
"Take me home country Roads." It was really hard to keep from breaking into dance,
and singing along was an option I had to control over.  Automatic pilot kicked in and there
I was singing in the middle of the store.

From Lisa D ...
The week of June 12-17 I accompanied some youth in my church on a mission trip to Charleston, WV. A tradition on these trips is to make a CD for all of the vans. My son put together the CD for this trip and started it with
"Country Roads"! It was so much fun riding
out of the church parking lots, our church on June 12 and our host church in Charleston on
the 17, with
John blaring from the speakers and our youth and adults singing along.

Christopher Westfall ...
                    "I'm Coming Home"

A review by Charles Paschal

Anyone that has even a remote interest in the music and legacy of John Denver should
certainly order a copy of
Christopher Westfall's new CD, "I'm Coming Home".  (chriswestfall.com)  Although only one of Denver's songs are covered on this CD,
you can certainly feel the influence that he's had in
Christopher's life on every track.  Christopher included three artists that know and understand John Denver's legacy
extremely well for this project, with
Chris Nole, Pete Huttlinger, and Jim Horn.
All three gentlemen were in
John Denver's band, and they bring a huge amount of
talent and professionalism to this project.

Christopher has included some of his own songs on this new album.  Calling a new
release an "album" these days may seem a bit old fashioned.  However, in this instance,
it's very accurate.  Each song creates an array of images as it speaks to you ... heart,
soul, and mind.
Christopher has a remarkable ability to take you along for the ride
with his music, and listening to this collection is very much like looking at his personal
photo album.  The songs that
Christopher wrote display his gift of weaving heartfelt
lyrics together with purely beautiful music.  Especially noteworthy is the title track,
"I'm Coming Home".  The song is so reminiscent of Denver's style, both lyrically and musically...but yet is directly from Christopher's heart.  The impact Denver had in
Christopher's life is quite apparent in his music.  Christopher takes that inspiration
and puts a very personal twist on it, producing pure magic with his superb songwriting
skills, musical talents, and wonderfully clear, lucid vocals.  This young man is for real.
He's not attempting to capitalize on
John Denver's legacy, rather, using the inspiration
that
Denver was and continues to be in his own life to share these unique gifts with others.
He writes from the heart, he sings from the heart, and performs the songs in a way that
will truly speak to the heart of the listener.  That is a very rare gift in an artist today ...
one of the things that made
John Denver unique...and one of the main reasons that
you will enjoy this album.

John Denver fans will most certainly enjoy Christopher's cover of "Annie's Other Song".
The arrangement of this song is breathtaking, and clearly demonstrates both the power of
Denver's music and the abilities of Christopher as an artist.  Another wonderful track is
"When You Love Someone", also penned by Christopher.  The depth and meaning of
the lyrics are so moving; the music flows so easily, the vocals absolutely superb.
"Down This Road", also written by Christopher, is simply awesome.  The lyrics definitely
speak to the heart of the listener, and you find yourself thinking, "yes, I have been down
this road before".  It's that kind of magic, where the lyrics evoke familiar and warm
feelings within your own heart, that sets
Christopher Westfall apart from all the others.
This young man is going places.  Buy this CD, and travel along with him on the journey.

Quotes for You Quotations are wonderful. Whether a screensaver, a post-it note on a

All of us will be pulled off center, we will be shaped by both disaster and delight.
So we need to learn the art of returning home, retuning to center, letting go of all that
binds us too tightly to both fear and to hope, letting go of our attachment to both
doom and reward, letting go of all that leaves us wobbling.  When we learn to return
home in this way, we will return bearing gifts.    --

Steve Brook...The Voice Of an Angel                    review by Cynthia Gullage

I was introduced to the music of Steve Brook last year by our
Friend
Irene Kavanagh.  She sent me one of his CD's
"Open Spaces".  I was hooked by the first track
"A place called home".  My Mom, who was also
listening to the CD said, "It sounds like home."Exactly!
That song took me right back to my childhood
days in St. John's, Newfoundland.

Steve has, what I would term a gentle sound, yet lush, evocative and romantic.
His music takes one to far away places and
"Back Home Again"Steve has written
and performs two tribute songs to
John Denver ... "On Angel's Wings" From the CD
"The Best Of Steve Brook" and "Shooting Stars", from his latest CD, "The Wolf In Us All"
To hear a segment of each of these songs, visit
Steve's web site www.stevebrook.com
You won't be disappointed.  I advise you to have your tissues handy.
Steve is also a
talented artist and photographer.  Again, you may view his work, read about his
devotion to
John and learn of his background by visiting his web site.

For the first time,
Steve will be going to Aspen this year and will be giving a concert at
The Mountain Chalet on October 10th. For those of you going, please have a listen to
the songs of an extremely talented man.  My only regret is that I won't be there to hear
him sing in person.
Good luck Steve, and peace go with you.
